What are Crunchy Yellow Peas?

Very simply, our Crunchy Yellow Peas are roasted yellow split peas.

What are yellow split peas?

Yellow split peas (pisum sativum) are a yellow variety of the simple garden pea that has dried on the vine and naturally split in half at the cotyledon (fancy Latin word). Yellow split peas have a neutral flavor versus the green split peas that you might use in soup.

Do Crunchy Yellow Peas taste like peas?

Not really. Because they are roasted, they taste more like a nut (even though they are nut free). Yellow split peas have a very neutral flavor to begin with, so they easily take on flavorings. 

Do yellow split peas have a lot of fat?

Nope. Yellow split peas naturally have very little fat. A quick comparison: roasted almonds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds all have about 4x as much fat as our Crunchy Yellow Peas. That's a big difference. You get all the nutrition of a nut or seed wrapped in 4x less fat.

How do Crunchy Yellow Peas compare to roasted edamame or soy beans?

Very favorably. While Crunchy Yellow Peas and roasted edamame have about the same combined protein and fiber, yellow split peas have much more resistant starch (SCFA/butyrate), which is a driver of gut health and a critical component of satiety (satisfying your hunger). 

Are yellow split peas the same thing as lentils?

Depending on where you live, some people call split peas lentils, but they are botanically and practically different. While they have about the same amount of plant protein per serving (a lot!), yellow split peas have about 40% more fiber than lentils. Truly a fiber powerhouse!

Do Crunchy Yellow Peas have a lot of sugar?

No, they do not. Peas have a little bit of natural sugar, but our Crunchy Yellow Peas are a savory snack with no added sugar at all. In fact, Crunchy Yellow Peas are the highest fiber no added sugar snack on the market (at least that we can find).

How do we make Crunchy Yellow Peas?

Crunchy Yellow Peas are roasted in the same way that most almonds, peanuts, cashews and sunflower seeds are roasted. We use the same type of equipment. Yellow split peas roast quickly, so the roasting process is about 2x quicker than almonds and about 10x faster than cashews and sunflower seeds.

Why are Crunchy Yellow Peas packed with so much nutrition?

We start with sun dried yellow split peas. Because the peas are dried, the nutrition is super concentrated - all of the nutrition of a garden pea, but with the water mostly removed. The protein and fiber is 5x more densely packed than a fresh pea.

Why do you say Crunchy Yellow Peas have balanced macros?

With 9 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber per pack, Crunchy Yellow Peas have unusually balanced marcos. And it goes beyond that. Because Crunchy Yellow Peas have relatively low fat combined with essential complex carbs (in the form of fiber and resistant starch), they are perfectly in the sweet spot of the recommended macro nutrients for USDA Dietary Guidelines. Our comparatively low fat, high protein, high fiber and complex carbs are exceptionally balanced - especially for a snack.

What sort of wizardry are you using to create such a macro balanced snack?

In short - Nature. Crunchy Yellow Peas aren't the result of an odd culinary chemical experiment - nothing artificial, no protein isolates, no fiber derivatives, no sugar substitutes, just understandable ingredients. We started with a spectacular primary ingredient, learned how to roast it, and tried not to mess it up.

Where do you source your yellow split peas?

There is a beautiful area of North America that starts in the Palouse region of the Western US and extends northward into Southwestern Canada. It is the perfect cool climate for growing all sorts of pulses (beans and peas). Our yellow split peas are sourced from this region.
